When air leaves the lung, it collapses. The air then fills the area between the chest wall and the lung that is located outside of the lung. The lung is under pressure from this air accumulation, which prevents it from expanding as much as it would usually when you take a breath. Pneumothorax is the formal name for this condition. Lung blebs (air blisters) that rupture and let air into the space around the lung can occasionally lead to a collapsed lung. This might happen when there are fluctuations in air pressure, like when scuba diving or ascending to a high altitude. People who are tall, slender, and smokers are more likely to experience lung collapse. A little pneumothorax could resolve on its own with time. You could merely require oxygen therapy and rest.
